Inlays and Onlays
(Partial Crowns) in San Diego

When a tooth is damaged by decay, wear, or fracture, it does not always require a full crown. Inlays and onlays – often referred to as partial crowns – are custom dental restorations that repair moderate damage while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. They offer an excellent balance between strength, aesthetics, and conservation of healthy tooth tissue.

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are laboratory-made restorations crafted from porcelain, composite resin, or gold. They are bonded directly to the tooth and restore both function and appearance.

Inlays within the grooves of the tooth, and is used when damage is limited to the center portion of the chewing surface.

Onlays cover a larger area, and extends over one or more cusps of the tooth when structural support is needed. Both options are more durable and precise than traditional fillings and less aggressive than full crowns.

When Inlays and Onlays Are Recommended

Dentists commonly recommend inlays or onlays when a cavity or fracture is too large for a filling but does not justify a full crown.

They are also ideal for replacing large, failing fillings, repairing cracked or worn teeth, and restoring chewing strength while maintaining natural tooth anatomy.

Because less enamel is removed compared to crowns, these restorations help preserve the long-term health of the tooth.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are highly durable and can last 10 to 20 years with proper care.

Porcelain options are color-matched to blend seamlessly with natural teeth and resist staining from coffee, tea, and wine.

Because they are custom-made and bonded, they strengthen the tooth and reduce the risk of future fracture.

Most importantly, they conserve more natural tooth structure than crowns, making them a more conservative restorative choice.

What the Procedure Involves

Treatment usually requires two visits. During the first appointment, the dentist removes the decayed or damaged tooth structure and prepares the tooth. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the restoration. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth.

At the second visit, the temporary material is removed and the inlay or onlay is bonded securely into place.

The dentist carefully adjusts the bite to ensure comfort and proper function. Once bonded, the restoration feels natural and functions like a healthy tooth.

Caring for Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are cared for just like natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits are essential.

Avoiding habits such as chewing ice or hard candies will help extend the life of the restoration. With good oral hygiene, these restorations can provide long-term reliability and comfort.

Are Inlays or Onlays Right for You?

If you have moderate tooth damage and want a strong, natural-looking restoration without removing excessive tooth structure, an inlay or onlay may be an excellent option. Your dentist can determine the best choice based on the size of the defect, bite forces, and overall tooth health.
